Scripture Reading
Philippians 3:7-14, Paul counts all things as loss compared to knowing Christ and that he is pressing toward “the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
Do you desire Him more than anything in this world? Does the longing for an intimate walk with Him burn like a fire in your soul? Are you ready to do whatever it takes to be close to Him? To give up whatever may be required in order to gain Him?
I am not talking about salvation here. If you have trusted Christ as your Savior you are already saved. You already possess eternal life. I am talking about moving up to the next level, the level of discipleship where you make the Lord your all in all. Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Notice the sequence: self-denial, cross-bearing and obedience to Christ. In self-denial we lay aside our own will and plans in favor of His. By cross bearing we identify with Christ daily in His life, death, resurrection and ministry. Obedience means we go where He leads and do what He directs.
The King of Kings was serious enough about you to die for you. How serious are you about Him? He wants to lift you higher. But are you willing to go? The path to the next level goes down before it goes up. Humility comes before exaltation. James wrote, “Submit therefore to God...Draw near to God and He will draw near to you... Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”
Paul was committed, more than anything else he wanted to know Christ. This is why he testified: “I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord...that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.” Paul went down in order to be lifted up. But he always kept the end in sight. He let nothing distract him from his goal: “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Are you pursuing the upward call of God? That is where the greatest intimacy is found. Going to the next level means greater sacrifice and greater suffering. But it also means greater blessings and greater glories. When Jesus took Peter, James and John up the mountain with Him, they saw Him transfigured . They saw Jesus as He really was. And afterwards, they never saw the world in quite the same way again. Jesus took them to a higher level.
What about you? Do you want the Lord to take you to the next level? Go down in order to be lifted up! Get serious!
